What Nancy Knows

Babies on the stairway, kitchen in the hall
Heatwave every summer; can't close the door till fall
I was raised in the city; out on the street I grew
Living with all those people, never guessed what Nancy knew

First time I saw country, was a grown boy of nineteen
Stood neck-deep in the cornfield, air blew dusty and clean
Wind out over the cornfield, feel which way it blows
I spend my time in the country learning what Nancy Knows

City life makes folk hurry, old ones die too young
So much strife and worry, and race with everyone
Brushing her hair by the cradle, listen to the song of the crows
They're talking  by the light of the fireflies, telling what Nancy knows
